From “Community classrooms” to the social vocation of the outdoors: an interview with the architects of Glasgow-based O’DonnellBrown studio

 
A dimension that symbolises post-pandemic recovery and the use of space for new projects with a social vocation, architects are increasingly looking outdoors to host functions that were traditionally linked to the indoor world. The designers at the O’DonnellBrown Studio in Glasgow are well aware that they have revolutionised the idea of a school with their “Community classroom” project, creating an actual classroom designed as a system of wooden components to be assembled and modulated outdoors. Our interview with the architects of Jennifer O’Donnell and Sam Brown's team starts precisely from this new outpost of learning and sociality to raise the question: what does the future hold for the outdoors?

On 20 June 2018 at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, the award ceremony was held for the 25th edition of the ADI Compasso d'Oro Award, the oldest and most prestigious award for Italian design given to goods, services and research distinguished by quality, innovation, ethical responsibility and sustainability. 283 projects went through a two-year selection, but only 16 were awarded the Compasso d'Oro, and 56 received an Honourable Mention.
As we are always attentive to the latest developments of Italian and international design, we have followed this event with extreme interest as it shines a spotlight on the tradition of excellence that sets apart products Made in Italy, always on the leading edge of innovation and oriented towards a global market.

"Architecture is a way of thinking and not a job", said the great architect Le Corbusier. This is absolutely true, so much so that now like never before an education in architecture represents an added value, versatile and transversal, able to inspire with an overview of many sectors, from communications to outdoor living, not focused exclusively on operational and design phases. Within this fruitful blend of knowledge it is interesting to explore the contribution of women architects, which is also expressed in an approach and in a sensitivity that are neither better nor worse but certainly different from those of men. The number of women architects is increasing all over the world (in Italy they account for 42% of the total), making "the woman question" in architecture an interesting topic to be studied in all its many nuances.

The Salone del Mobile and the Fuorisalone 2018, from 17^th to 22^nd April, have in fact animated the Milan Design Week, enhancing, once again, the central role of the city on topics such as the culture of design and the importance of the Made in Italy worldwide.

Once again Corradi is heavily involved in Milano Design Week: six days during which the Milanese metropolis is preparing itself to be the undisputed centre of all the events connected to the world of architecture and design, and which after its success year after year has become the protagonist of a much broader project.

As part of an event that grows out of the main hubs of the city and that provides opportunities for fusion, construction and development of a shared design culture, Corradi will participate in Milano Design Week with five macro events at three different locations.

Today in the world of outdoor furniture the term pergotenda is used in a generic way to identify a type of product consisting in a pergola structure covered by retractable canvas.

However, Pergotenda® is actually the registered trademark of a Corradi patent that created a whole new market. In fact, before its invention there was no product with a mobile stacking cover, so the brand not only comprises the name but also its unique and unrivalled technical specifications.

It’s time to celebrate.

Every anniversary is a special occasion for balances: 40 years have passed since the foundation of our company in Bologna, a workshop for the production of awnings at that time. Moreover, 20 years already since the Pergotenda^® patent, which marked a decisive turning point in sun protection, effectively opening a new market and making Corradi a benchmark in the sector.

This year the experts at Pantone Colour Institute have come up with a difficult, flamboyant colour, often considered inappropriate (don't dare wear it to the theatre!). No, don't call it violet, because it is much more than that: it is Ultra Violet, the Pantone colour of 2018 that will set trends and be used in combinations and experiments in the worlds of fashion, design and furniture until December. We have studied it for you and we want to reveal what we have discovered, especially when it comes to using the colour of the year in outdoor furniture.

From Feb 27 to Mar 3 we will attend R+T at Messe Stuttgart, landmark for innovation in sun protection during the last 50 years. The right context to present Corradi in Wonderland, and a lot of news to give space to your time.

The time has come: Monday, Feb. 26th we will inaugurate the new headquarter in Via M. Serenari 20 in Castel Maggiore (Bologna).

The 29^th edition of Intergastra, the biennial event dedicated to the world of gastronomy and hospitality, returns from 3^rd to 7^th of February at the Messe Stuttgart. Thanks to the recent expansion of the exhibition area, it will be now able to count on 115.000 sq. m of space, to welcome the approximately 100.000 visitors expected and the 1,400 international exhibitors. 

The appointment with the Women's Ski World Cup, which opens 2018 with the free downhill and super-G races awaited by athletes and enthusiasts, is back. Spotlight on the Queen of the Dolomites, which from 19^th to 21^st of January will welcome a large audience of athletes, technicians, sports personalities, media and VIPs in the fascinating setting of Cortina d’Ampezzo’s Alps.

The “Nancy Forum” promoted by Alliance Paysage from 17^th to 19^th of January brings together the network of independent landscape architects who, since 1994, have been working to define standards, proposals and trends in the high-end garden design sector.

Delicate is the wind that caresses the French countryside when the sun timidly shines once again after the cold and the silence. Yellow, purple, red and green, the flowers...

A special event will offer Corradi the chance to get in contact with the leaders of the sun protection business in the Netherlands: this is the “Romazo day” on November 6^th, organized by the association of the sector.

40 selected companies, 500 architects attending, a location with a high aesthetic and architectural value. On October 19^th, Corradi will represent “Made in Italy” at Meesters in de Tuin, in Cuijk, The Netherlands. One day dedicated to meetings, thoughts and brainstorming between master companies and landscape architects, organized by Inspyrum, a Dutch company well kown in the outdoor industry.

Born from the collaboration between L’Arca International and the Créad Institute of Lyon - a benchmark for the training and the improvement of architects, designers and decorators - the innovative concept that will be open to the specialized public from October 19^th and for six months, in the premises of the institute.

The Bologna Design Week, with CERSAIE as official partner in this third edition, has definitely been an important opportunity for development, not only for the Emilia Romagna territory, but also for national and international realities.

The most important Italian event dedicated to hotellerie is back. From 12^th to 14^th October at Rimini Fiera, more than 14,000 hoteliers will be involved, thanks to the simultaneity of TTG Incontri, a B2B event for tourism industry, and with Sun, Salone dell’Outdoor.
